It looks as if the world of indie rock has moved on from last year's two-man noise punk phase, and has gotten caught up in a revival of the three-man, garage pop-punk fad. I hate to use the term "pop-punk," but I don't really know what else to call the light yet somewhat aggressive nature of The Soft Pack, Harlem, and the rest of the Casual Victim Pile brigade's new sound. A prime example of this, and a personal favorite of mine, is from Harlem's upcoming Matador release Hippies, which hits stores next Tuesday. The simplicity of "Friendly Ghost" is nothing short of refreshing, as are the fun lyrics. It's about time we take a step back and enjoy the simpler things in life, as well as in music. It's nice to take a break from all those layers of voices on Veckatimest and the deep lyrics of Hospice and just let loose. Hopefully this song, as well as the rest of the album, will adequately soundtrack the bulk of my summer season.
