Built To Spill - "Goin' Against Your Mind"

For some reason, I've been disappointed with Built to Spill's last few albums. You In Reverse wasn't really an exception, but this song is just ridiculously good. It's probably one of my favorite opening tracks of all time, if not my favorite. Everything from the odd guitar sounds to the contrasting fast and slow paced riffs and sick bridges really set the mood for the rest of the album. At nearly ten minutes, every second of it is entirely necessary. It's definitely not the kind of insanely long song that gets old after a few minutes; Built to Spill seems to have mastered the art of taking a song in a completely different direction when you least expect it. This is a perfect example of that and the album as a whole just goes to show that they're only getting better at it.
