Sage Francis - "Slow Man"
I really didn't listen to much hip-hop before discovering San Fran's experimental Anticon record label, known for rewriting all the rules to the genre. Sage Francis may not be a member of the Anticon clan, but his style is very similar to theirs and I'm sure that at some point in his career he's collaborated with one of the founding members. "Slow Man" is a very interesting song in that aside from Sage's voice, the song is mostly just acoustic guitar and drums, something I've never heard a hip hop artist do in my life. Like Yoni, Sole, and everyone else at Anticon, the lyrics are as impressive or more so than the instrumental portion of the song, which is definitely something I look for in a hip hop artist. So far this is my pick for best hip hop track of the year, but I've heard wind of a new Aesop Rock disc. So don't get too excited yet, Sage.
